Of Counsel
Won Joon Kim served as managing partner of FirstLaw and led the Electrical/IT Group for several decades before taking on his role as Of Counsel. His foresight, especially related to patents in the field of electrical engineering, was a critical factor in establishing FirstLaw as both an international and domestic prosecution powerhouse.
Mr. Kim was a pioneer in the Korean patent field, being the first patent attorney with a computer science background. While earning his doctorate, Mr. Kim lectured at two of the most prestigious universities in Korea, and continued to lecture at Korea’s premier engineering institute as an adjunct professor after he became a patent attorney. He rounded out his studies at the University of Washington School of Law, earning his LL.M. degree in Intellectual Property.
Combining his deep expertise of patent law with unparalleled expertise in the fields of computer science, software, deep learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, cloud technology, and other Fourth Industrial Revolution technology, Mr. Kim has spent more than 30 years providing FirstLaw’s clients with counsel that only he can provide; from the early patent drafting stages to enforcing or protecting patent rights, Mr. Kim is able to conduct a comprehensive analysis, while pinpointing potential risks that can be overlooked, to provide the client with an optimal patent strategy.
